Sustainable biogenic energy sources continue to play an important role in the decarbonisation of energy systems. On the one hand, they can contribute to CO₂ emission neutrality, and on the other hand, these energy sources represent an additional secure and non-volatile source of electricity and heat generation. Their contribution to a certain, albeit smaller, share will be inevitable for deep decarbonisation. Biogenic energy sources have also recently gained relevance against the backdrop of declining energy security from imported fossil fuels. Typical biogenic energy sources include, for example, biomethane, wood, waste wood and biogenic waste.
The non-transparent markets for such commodities represent a substantial challenge for decision-makers across sectors, especially when making investment decisions. On the one hand, fundamental developments in the energy markets are decisive, on the other hand, less quantifiable regulatory risks, for example the existing regulatory framework at EU level for the classification of green fuels and investments.
