Renewables Power Market Report Update 2026
Europe’s power markets are entering a new phase. Growing shares of solar and wind are reshaping price formation and revenue profiles for renewables and battery storage. While average power prices remain elevated, volatility and negative price periods are becoming a defining market feature.
Rapid PV expansion combined with strong solar irradiation has driven PV capture rates down across Central Western Europe and Iberia and significantly increased negative price hours. In Germany, around 24 % of potential PV generation now coincides with negative day-ahead prices, raising merchant exposure and PPA revenue risk as many schemes exclude remuneration during these periods.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid PV-BESS projects are increasingly key to stabilising revenues. At the same time, grid connection, market and regulatory constraints continue to limit project realisation.
