Strategic Transformation and Decarbonisation of Energy Supply Companies

Situation and Challenge

The path to climate-neutral energy supply is politically well-defined—by 2045 at the latest, energy supply companies (EVUs) must reduce their CO₂ emissions to net zero. At the same time, pressure is mounting from investors, regulatory authorities, municipal owners and customers to demonstrate visible and concrete transformation steps. This pressure to act does not only concern individual business units, but calls into question the entire business model of the company.

A mere continuation of existing strategies falls short. Instead, an integrated transformation approach is required—one that analyses and recalibrates both the economic viability and the decarbonisation trajectory based on robust scenarios.

enervis Solutions

enervis supports EVUs in developing strategic transformation pathways towards climate neutrality—comprehensively, model-based and data-driven. Our advisory approach is built upon a broad set of long-term energy market models, including power price, hydrogen, gas and heat models. These provide the framework for robust scenario analyses spanning several decades.

At the core of the project lies a model-based assessment of the entire corporate portfolio. Existing and new business areas are evaluated in terms of their economic viability, CO₂ impact and strategic role. The results provide a solid foundation for strategy development, capital allocation and communication with stakeholders.

Key analytical outputs include:

  • Long-term CO₂ emissions of the overall company
  • Contribution margins per business segment under varying market developments
  • Investment volumes for transformation, differentiated by segment
  • Sales volumes and energy flows, differentiated by technology and sector
  • Robust foundations for internal planning, external positioning and regulatory dialogue
