enervis develops customised market model for OGE

As Germany’s largest gas transmission system operator, Open Grid Europe (OGE) plays a key role in shaping the development of the national hydrogen core network. To provide a sound basis for the strategic planning of this network, OGE is developing a simulation tool that maps physical network flows and flexibility options.

OGE commissioned enervis to develop a comprehensive hydrogen market model to realistically capture future dynamic market processes.

Our Solution: Market Modelling with Foresight

Our market model provides hourly data on hydrogen consumption and production – precisely broken down by each entry and exit point in OGE’s grid area. This granularity enables analysis of future network utilisation and the significance of individual points in the emerging market structure.

The German hydrogen network will not operate in isolation but will be integrated at both the European and international levels. Therefore, cross-border supply and demand structures, as well as import routes, are also considered in detail.

Methodology: Scenarios, Markets, Technologies

The market model is designed as an equilibrium model, determining cost-optimised market allocations on an hourly basis. All relevant asset classes are represented in the model, including:

  • Supply side: e.g. electrolysers, pipeline imports, ship imports
  • Demand side: e.g. industry, power plants, heating sector
  • Flexibility: e.g. storage, exchange with neighbouring grids

The model can incorporate a wide range of scenario assumptions – for example, concerning the role of different hydrogen “colours”, the underlying design of the hydrogen support scheme, the role of carbon capture and storage (CCS), or various contractual frameworks (e.g. Hydrogen Purchase Agreements – HPAs).

“The extensive market knowledge combined with enervis’ in-depth modelling expertise enables realistic forecasts of grid utilisation – an essential building block for the strategic advancement of our hydrogen grid.“

Dr. Daniel Bick, Project Director, OGE
