Switzerland: Europe’s Energy Industry Hub. Study on the Drivers of the Swiss Energy Market – Market Outlook 2050

In addition to energy policy decisions within Switzerland, the development of the Swiss energy landscape is significantly influenced by the energy industry developments in neighboring regions.

This realization is not really new, because Switzerland has always been a kind of “energy hub” in Europe. What is new and significant, however, is that the previously known energy industry structures within Europe are changing ever more rapidly and permanently as a result of climate protection efforts.

Against this background, the study examines the emerging developments in Europe and their impact on the Swiss energy industry. In particular, the study examines the question: “What role will Switzerland, as part of the energy supply in Europe, play in the future? Through the analysis, options for action of the market and the own company can be shown.

CONTENTS

Within the framework of model-based fundamental analyses, the following topics, among others, are considered within the study. The study also includes an energy-economic classification of the calculation results by enervis, including the derivation of possible trends/action options for the Swiss energy market.

Low – Scenario »Laissez-faire« – Scenario
High – Scenario »Green« – Scenario

Webinar
The results will be presented and discussed in a webinar (approx. 1.5 h).

Focus
Within the study, the following trends/market drivers and their effects on the Swiss energy market will be examined more closely:

  • Fuel and CO2 price development
  • Lifetimes of nuclear power plants in Switzerland and France
  • Lifetimes of coal-fired power plants in Germany/Poland
  • Capacity Development of Renewable Energies in Europe
  • Expansion paths for hydropower in Switzerland and Austria
  • Power demand and sector coupling
  • Optional: e.g. weather dependencies (mapping of different wind and water years)

Basic results
The study contains the following analysis results, among others:

  • Day-ahead annual power prices
  • Development of power plant capacities/ structures
  • Development of power generation volumes
  • Balance of power trade and electricity trading volumes
  • Profitability of selected power plant technologies
  • Market values of renewable energies

Optional results

  • Hourly power prices
